Logic board repairs: The main symptoms and causes
8 Apr, 2022

Have you ever been using your laptop and it just dies on you, the screen goes black and you can’t restart it again? This is one of many other symptoms that may suggest you need a logic/motherboard repair. In this blog post, we’re going to discuss some of the main symptoms and causes of needing a logic board repair.

Liquid damage

One of the main culprits of killing motherboards is liquid damage. When a motherboard comes into contact with water it’s actually not the water that kills the machine but rather the solutes that are in the water. When wet, these substances are conductive which, granted, can still cause a short on the board but 9/10 of the problems arise after the liquid has dried. When dry, the minerals inside of the water become corrosive and start to destroy components on the board. This is why, if you ever spill water on your machine, time is of the essence. You should take your machine to a repair shop as soon as possible before the water dries.

However, sometimes it’s not that simple. Liquid damage can occur in many situations, not just from directly spilling water on your machine. For example, if you take your laptop in the shower with you, the steam can reach inside the machine and condensate later on. The same goes for if you leave your laptop in the car overnight in cold or damp conditions. If you’re not lucky enough to catch the issue quick enough and components start to corrode there is still hope. Individual components can be replaced on the board using a technique called micro soldering which gives a high chance your machine can be revived.

Insects crawling into the machine

Another cause of motherboard damage could be pesky little insects. If an insect crawls inside of the machine and dies on one of the components, this could cause it to short to ground. Short to ground basically means opening the floodgates in electrician terms, it means all of the electricity from the machine is escaping. This isn’t dangerous, it just means the machine won’t turn on.

Fortunately, these logic board repairs are generally easier than liquid damage as there should only be a couple of components affected which are also easier to identify.

General wear & tear

Motherboard damages don’t always occur from physical damage. It’s possible that the root of the issue is due to general use of the machine, electrical components aren’t full proof and become faulty after a certain amount of use. Although this is rare, especially with Apple, it’s still a possibility.

So now we’ve covered some of the main causes, let’s talk about the kind of symptoms you will incur when you need a logic board repair.

Black screen and machine not turning on

This is the number one symptom that indicates you need a logic board repair. When a component is faulty, it is no longer able to conduct electricity. When this happens the circuit is incomplete and as a result electricity can’t reach other vital components on the board and the machine will most likely be unable to start at all.

Any other machine issue

Logic board faults can cause a variety of issues with the machine but may not kill the machine completely. For example the camera or microphone might be broken as a result of damage on the board but the machine may still work.

It’s difficult to tell if you need a logic board repair unless you know what you’re looking for. It’s best to leave it to the experts and get a properly trained technician to diagnose the issue. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms or have spilt liquid on your machine contact us as soon as possible for a free diagnostics.
