How do I remove my device from iCloud?

A quick guide on how to remove an Apple device from iCloud, ready to sell or pass on.

iCloud is a convenient center point to link all of your Apple devices to one cloud system, not only can you sync data across multiple devices but you can also save all of that data in one place. Quite possibly the best trademark of all though is the security features iCloud possesses, from Find My iPhone to remote locking, signing into an iCloud account truly makes your device more secure.

This can however cause some issues when selling or passing your machine on. If the device is still listed on your iCloud account, the moment someone else tries to log in to the device, iCloud will lock it and require the password to unlock. In this quick guide, we are going to show you the 4 different ways to correctly remove your device from iCloud so it is ready to sell or pass on.

Method 1: Remove via the Apple ID website:

  1. Log into your Apple ID account at appleid.apple.com.

2. Select devices on the left hand side.

3. Select the device you want to remove.

4. Scroll down and click ‘remove from account’ then ‘confirm’.

Method 2: Remove via MacOS (Mojave and Later):

  1. Go to ‘System Preferences’.

2. Select ‘Apple ID’.

3. Select the device you wish to remove from your iCloud account on the left hand side of the window.

4. Select ‘Remove from account…’

5. Select ‘Remove’.

Method 3: Remove via MacOS (Catalina and Later):

  1. Open ‘System Preferences’.
  2. Select the ‘Apple ID pane’.
  3. Select your device from the list at the bottom of the left-hand side of the pane.
  4. Click Remove from Account and confirm.

Method 4: Remove via iOS/iPad OS:

  1. Open ‘System Preferences’.

2. Select ‘Apple ID’ preferences as pictured below.

3. Select the device you wish to remove.

4. Select ‘Remove from account’.

5. Select ‘Remove’.
